Westport Island has more than 70 known small family cemeteries. The Cemetery Committee has located and maintains these treasures of our history. The committee also places flags on all of the veteran’s graves — currently numbering over 50.

In 2017, the Cemetery Committee spearheaded a Cemetery Tour highlighting eight of our cemeteries and their associated history. The tour also explored gravestone symbols and what they meant. For a flavor of this interesting tour, see the 2017 Cemetery Tour Guide.

A complete list of cemeteries, with a list of those buried in each of the cemeteries, GPS coordinates of the cemeteries, and Find-A-Grave numbers, is available in the book Westport Island, Maine Cemeteries (Revised 2014). It is available for purchase for $15, at the History Center (Sundays, noon to 2 pm) and in the Town Office (Tuesday, 10 am to 6 pm; Wednesday and Thursday, 10 am to 2 pm).
